“Every Child has the right to go to school and Learn”

Education is a human right, a social welfare, and a communal responsibility.

In recognition of the significance of education in promoting peace and development, the United Nations General Assembly declared January 24 as International Day of Education.

In December 2019, the United Nations General Assembly declared January 24 as International Day of Education to recognize the importance of education in promoting peace and development. The International Day of Education is a statement of intent for people, civil society, and politicians to take concrete actions to ensure that children get elementary and secondary education, as well as to improve youth involvement in education. Learning programs should be created to meet the requirements of various groups while ultimately aiming to provide children with the knowledge they require for work and a better future.

Countries will fail to achieve gender equality and break the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth, and adults behind unless they provide inclusive and equitable quality education and lifetime opportunities for everyone.

There are currently 244 million children and teens out of school, while 771 million adults are illiterate. It is outrageous that their right to an education is being infringed. It is time to change schooling.

Pakistan and nations across the world mark International Day of Education on January 24th, reminding us that without inclusive and equitable quality learning for everyone, governments will fail to break the cycle of poverty that has left millions of children and their families behind.

The year 2023 represents the halfway point since the United Nations created the 2030 Agenda for People, Planet, and Prosperity, which includes a series of 17 interconnected objectives to be reviewed at the SDG Summit in September on the topic of investing in people.

Building on the global momentum produced by the UN Transforming Education Summit in September 2022, this year’s Day urges for further political mobilization around education and paving the way for commitments and global initiatives to be translated into action. To speed progress toward all of the Sustainable Development Goals in the face of a global recession, increasing inequities, and the climate catastrophe, education must be prioritized.
